"Elikem did not attend our wedding; he married me in absentia."
The life of teenage seamstress Afi Tekple is quickly coming to an end. She and her mother, who is widowed, reside in a small Ghanaian town, but she spends a lot of time at her uncle Pious's home, where he has numerous wives and kids. Then one day she receives a proposal of marriage from the wealthy family of Elikem Ganyo, a man she doesn't really know, which presents her with a chance that could change her life. She agrees and quickly finds out that Elikem is not as good as he first appears to be. Afi meets her new spouse just a few weeks after she is married and moves into an opulent apartment in Accra, the country's capital, after he sends a stand-in to his own wedding. It turns out that his family disapproves of the other lady he is in love with, and Afi is meant to win him back on their behalf. However, Accra ends up winning Afi over and providing her with an independent life she never would have dreamed of.
