A raiding group of fierce tribal warriors in Northern Genabackis descends into the southern flatlands from the mountains. While their goal is to cause chaos among the hated lowlanders, it also heralds the start of what would turn out to be a remarkable fate for one Karsa Orlong.

It is the aftermath of the Chain of Dogs, some years later. The Adjunct to the Empress, Tavore, has reached Seven Cities, the final bastion of Malazan resistance. As the new leader, she has a twelve thousand-strong army to train, most of whom are fresh recruits except for a few who were part of Coltaine's fabled march. This force has to be strong enough to take on the gathered masses of Sha'ik's Whirlwind, who are lying in wait in the middle of the Holy Desert.

But it's never simple to wait. The warlords loyal to the seer are embroiled in a fight for supremacy that might destroy the rebellion's core, and Sha'ik is left suffering since she is aware that Tavore, her sister, is her enemy.
