Through a combination of noir and hallucinogenic humor, Thomas Pynchon's private eye Occasionally, Doc Sportello emerges from his marijuana-induced haze to see the passing of a period of time as unrequited love disappears and paranoia permeates the L.A. mist.
Doc Sportello hasn't seen Shasta Fay, his ex-girlfriend, in a while. She appears out of the blue and tells a tale about a scheme to abduct a millionaire property developer that she just so happens to fall in love with. She could say it easily. In Los Angeles during the conclusion of the psychedelic era in the 1960s, Doc is aware that "love" is just one of those trendy terms right now, similar to "trip" or "groovy," but with a tendency to lead to disaster. Nevertheless, he soon finds himself enmeshed in a bizarre web of motivations and desires that includes rockers, hustlers, surfers, killer loan sharks, tenor saxophonists operating undercover, a former con man with a swastika tattoo and a crush on Ethel Merman, and a mysterious organization known as the Golden Fang, which might just be a tax evasion scheme orchestrated by some shady dentists.
Working in a genre that is unfamiliar to him, Thomas Pynchon offers a vibrant tale that serves as a classic example of the idea that if you can recall the 1960s, you weren't there, or if you were, then you... or, wait, is it...hang on...what?
