Chyna Shepard, 26, can't sleep on her first night at her best friend's family's Napa Valley house. She looks out a starry window beyond midnight. The instinct is trustworthy. Edgler Foreman Vess, a vicious maniac, has broken into the home with the intention of murdering everyone inside. As a self-described "homicidal adventurer," Vess's primary goals in life are to sate every need as it arises, to fully experience every feeling, to live without regret or fear, and to live with "intensity." Chyna is imprisoned inside his lethal circle.

Chyna has endured a lifetime of fighting for her safety and dignity, which has made her resilient. She will be put to the test like never before. Her main goal at first is to escape alive, but by happenstance, she finds out who Vess's next target is—a distant innocent whom only she can rescue. Motivated by a recently identified need for purpose beyond basic survival, Chyna gathers all of her inner strength to rescue a girl who is in danger—even as Edgler Foreman Vess's horrific threat becomes more real by the second.
