A young guy from a wealthy family hitched a ride to Alaska in April 1992 and ventured out on his own into the wilderness to the north of Mount McKinley. Christopher Johnson McCandless was his name. He had burnt all the money in his wallet, given away his whole savings of $25,000 to charity, and created a new life for himself. His decomposing remains was discovered by a group of moose hunters four months later. The remarkable tale of Into the Wild is how McCandless ended up dead.

Following his college graduation in 1991, McCandless embarked on a vision quest, akin to that of his idols Jack London and John Muir, and wandered the West and Southwest. He burnt all of his money, took off the registration plates, and left his automobile in the Mojave Desert. He would rename himself Alexander Supertramp and be free to immerse himself in the unadulterated, unfiltered sensations that nature had to offer, free from the constraints of money and possessions. McCandless just tossed the maps away, craving a blank area on the map. He disappeared into the wilderness, leaving his sister and his frantic parents behind.
