A little Black girl vanishes from her white Rust Belt community and disappears into the woods. However, she is not the first, and she may not be the last either....
It is observing.
With some reluctance, Liz Rocher is returning home. Liz is a Black lady, and she doesn't exactly remember the mostly white town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in a positive light. She prepares herself for a weekend of uncomfortable and passive-aggressive reunions, however, since her closest friend is getting married. But Liz has matured; she can face whatever is ahead. However, the bride's daughter Caroline disappears on the day of the wedding midway between dance and dinner; all that's left is a blood-stained piece of white cloth.
It takes time.
Liz is the only one who spots a pattern as the police conduct a hectic search, searching the woods for Caroline. It's a summer night. A female missing. a gathering in the forest. This is nothing new to her. The only other Black girl in the school, Keisha Woodson, went into the woods with an enigmatic male; she was discovered later on, her heart removed and her chest cavity torn apart. Liz trembles at the possibility that it was her, and because Caroline is no longer there, it cannot be a coincidence. Liz discovers a terrifying fact about the community she once called home as she begins to look into its past. For years, kids have been going missing in these forests. They're all Black. They're all girls.
Your turn now.
As the darkness draws nearer in the forest, Liz realizes she had to locate Caroline or risk being engulfed by it.
