In the small southern town of Heartsdale, Saturday night dates at the skating rink have been a tradition for as long as anyone can remember. However, when an adolescent argument turns into a lethal shootout, Sara Linton, the town's pediatrician and medical examiner, finds herself embroiled in a terrible tragedy.
What seemed to be a terrible, isolated incident first turns out to have larger ramifications. Evidence of ritualistic self-mutilation and long-term abuse is found during the autopsy, but Sara and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver are met with obstacles at every step as they begin their investigation.
The kids who are close to the victim form a tight group. Families turn away from one another. Subsequently, a little girl is kidnapped, and it emerges that the first killing is connected to a much more heinous crime than anyone could have predicted. Detective Lena Adams, meantime, is attracted to a young guy who seems to have the answers, even though she is still healing from the loss of her sister and her own violent assault. However, it will occur once again unless Lena, Sara, and Jeffrey are able to discover the lethal truths the kids are hiding.
