The Talamasca, investigators of paranormal phenomena, are searching for Lasher, who was just born. Hemorrhages are killing Mayfair women, and Rowan and Michael have an unusual genetic defect. Born of Rowan, Lasher is a whole different species and poses an immense danger to the Mayfairs now that he is a physical being. Together, Rowan and Lasher go to Houston, where she falls pregnant with a Taltos, a monster similar to him. Other ladies are unable to resist Lasher's attempts to replicate his race in them. After escaping, Rowan gives birth to her fully grown Taltos daughter and goes into a coma. The Mayfairs attempt to heal Rowan and vow complete war on Lasher.

Michael stays involved with the Mayfair family and discovers the source of his unusual abilities. Michael's spectral visitation from a deceased Mayfair highlights the need of eliminating Lasher. During the inquiry, the family is engulfed in the climax of death and life, Lasher's roots are disclosed, and the new Taltos Emaleth returns.
