Never presume anything based on what you see or have heard.

Over Memorial Day weekend, Adam and Sophie Warner, together with their three-year-old daughter, are taking a vacation in Washington State's Hood Canal. It's the ideal retreat to disconnect and soothe a tense marriage. But Adam witnesses Sophie being kidnapped by an unknown person on his first day out on the lake. Adam is unable to rescue her a hundred yards off the coast. Sophie then vanishes.

Kristen and Connor Moss, another couple, are staying at a neighbouring cottage. Sadly, they don't know anything about Sophie's disappearance except what they've read in the news. Knowing that Mason County investigator Lee Husemann is an old friend of Adam's provides some solace, at least. She'll do every effort to be of assistance. She has to.

However, as Adam's anxiety over his wife being missing grows, Lee puts the jigsaw pieces together. The image is disconcerting since the lives of the two spouses are unexpectedly overlapping. Lee believes that some people are lying about what they know, or that some people haven't told the strangers they married about all the falsehoods they've said.
