This endearing and very moving book, One Day meets Groundhog Day, follows a stressed-out lady who has to relive the same day repeatedly in order to prevent her personal and professional lives from collapsing while trying to save her spouse from an unfavorable outcome.
Emma, a harried literary agent from London, is leaving the office as usual on this typical Monday. Her son can hardly look her in the eye, her daughter won't approach her, and her beautiful husband Dan appears to be in mourning due to her constant focus on work and her never-ending to-do list. The dog appears depressed as well.
She is constantly occupied, engrossed in her phone, responding to "emergency" messages from customers, social media alerts pinging, and managing twelve different WhatsApp groups pertaining to the kids' playdates, sports, school, and other activities. What else is new? Her entire day has been chaotic, and even as she runs back through the door for dinner, Dan is still not happy. After they argue, he leaves, looking forlorn, while dragging their miserable puppy around the neighborhood. She hears the brakes squeal just as she realizes she had forgotten their anniversary once more.
Dan has passed away.
Next morning, Emma awakens. and Dan is still living. And once more it's Monday.
once more.
once more.
Emma wakes up every morning trying frantically to change her destiny. She deletes her messages from WhatsApp, tells her boss where to go, writes to Dan, spends time with her kids, reconnects with old acquaintances, gets wasted, and buys Prada. Will Emma, however, be able to rediscover who she is, what she enjoys about her work, build a relationship with her kids, and love her husband? Will this be sufficient to alter the apparent fate they are headed for?
Fans of women's fiction will undoubtedly find this poignant "What if" tale about learning to slow down and enjoy life, about never feeling like we're doing it quite right, about what it's like to be a woman in the current world, to be relatable.
