Fern Brookbanks has spent an excessive amount of her adult life contemplating Will Baxter. In her early twenties, she had barely twenty-four hours with the gratingly beautiful, idealistic artist—a fortuitous meeting that turned into a full-day experience in Toronto. They had a strong bond, shared every secret and aspiration, and agreed to meet again in a year, even if the time was off. Fern appeared. Nor did Will.

Fern's life at thirty-two doesn't resemble what she had anticipated at all. Fern, who pledged never to live in a city, is back home, managing her mother's lakeside cottage in Muskoka. Fern's ex-boyfriend is the manager, the building is in disorder, and she has no idea where to start.

She needs a strategy, a lifeline. She is shocked to see that it's Will, who shows up nine years too late carrying a bag and offering to assist. Will could be the only one who can relate to Fern's situation. However, how could she possible put her confidence in this expensively dressed illusion, who doesn't even resemble the young guy she met years ago? Fern isn't sure whether she wants to find out what Will is concealing.
