A dramedy about two young people at a crossroads in their relationship and the boundaries of love that is hilarious, seductive, and meaningful.
Two young men who reside together in Houston are named Benson and Mike. After a few happy years together, Mike, a Japanese American cook at a Mexican restaurant, and Benson, a Black daycare teacher, are unsure of why they are still together. Of course, there is the sex and the food that Mike prepares for Benson, but more than that, they are in love.
However, Mike gets up and jets across the globe to say farewell when he learns that his estranged father is dying in Osaka, coincidentally with the arrival of his snarky Japanese mother, Mitsuko, in Texas for a visit. He experiences a remarkable metamorphosis in Japan after learning the truth about his background and family. Back home, Mitsuko and Benson are forced to live together as unusual roommates—a ridiculous household circumstance that has a deeper significance for both of them than either of them could have imagined. Benson starts to push outwards without Mike's instant pull, understanding he might just know what he wants out of life and have the skills to get it.
Both men will experience changes that will either strengthen their bond or shatter everything they have ever known. And perhaps in the end, everything will be alright. Memorial is a poignant and witty tale about the boundaries of love, embracing vulnerability in all of its glorious forms, and growing up and being oneself.
