As far as she knew, the globe was named Montefiore, and the world plummeted from her aerie on all sides.

At Montefiore, her adored father Don Vicente's property, seven-year-old Bianca de Nevada lives high above the undulating hills and valleys of Tuscany and Umbria in the year 1502. She is taken care of by the earthy chef Primavera Vecchia and the priest Fra Ludovico there, who cares to their souls in between mouthfuls of ham and sip of wine.

However, the world visits Montefiore when an aristocratic entourage ascends the farm's winding hills one day. Nobody can remain innocent for very long in the company of the decadent offspring of a cruel pope, Cesare Borgia and his sister, the beautiful and conceited Lucrezia. Bianca is left in the care of Lucrezia when Borgia sent Don Vicente on a protracted expedition to retrieve a remnant of the original Tree of Knowledge. She plans the little girl's terrible destiny in the woods under the property, but there is also hope in the shadowy woodland.

Light always catches the eye, but shadows speak louder than light.
