Forever, Millie Morris has been a boy. She is a female serial killer specialist and a professor at UC Santa Barbara. She is good at deflecting attention and awful at getting intimate. She is also always single, much like her four closest male friends and fellow academics.

Thus, Mille and her group decide to use an internet dating service to locate dates for the black tie gala that turns into an ordinary university gathering. The only problem is that, after agreeing to the plan, Millie and Reid Campbell, one of the males, have the hottest half-night of their life together in secret. However, they both decide that a platonic relationship would be preferable.

However, internet dating is not for the timid. When Millie makes her first profile effort, all she gets is dick pictures and creepers, while the boys are flooded with excellent matches and possible dates. Here comes "Catherine," Millie's made-up profile character, who allows her to be more open than she ever has been in real life. Soon after, "Catherine" and Reid become pen pals online, but Millie finds it difficult to resist temptation in real life as well. Millie is about to confront her greatest fear—intimacy—or else she could lose her closest friend for good.
