Douglass trained himself to read and write after being born a slave on a Maryland farm about 1818 (the exact year of birth was unknown to slave owners). Seven years after making his way to the North, in 1845, he released the first of his three autobiographies, Narrative. The horrors and achievements of his early years—the everyday, casual violence of the white masters; his agonizing attempts to educate himself; his resolve to pursue freedom or die; and his terrifying but successful escape—are all quietly but passionately recounted in this book.

A gifted writer and orator, Douglass went on to work as a newspaper editor, a political activist, and a persuasive voice for African Americans' civil rights. He experienced the start of segregation, the end of slavery, and the Civil War. As the preeminent black scholar of his day, he was honored globally, and his legacy continues to have resonance in our time.
