Nearing thirty, Maria Griffiths works in a secondhand bookshop in NYC and tries to uphold her punk principles. She is not in love with Steph, her lover, but rather with her bike. She consumes more alcohol than is healthy and takes sporadic pills, but since she is transgender, she only injects estrogen when she remembers to. Everything is going well until Steph and Maria split up, which makes Maria crazy. After that, she takes the vehicle she stole from Steph on a cross-country journey. After arriving in the sleepy Nevadan hamlet of Star City, she encounters James, who may or may not be transgender and who makes Maria think of her younger self. Maria recognizes that she has the potential to either be James's rescue or his destruction as she finds herself in the difficult role of trans role model.
