Harry Booth began stealing at the age of nine in order to provide for his sick mother. At night, he would sneak into opulent, deserted houses in search of goods that he could exchange for valuable currency. He fled Chicago when his mother's illness eventually took her life, but he continued to work nights.

He assumes many identities as he travels from the Outer Banks to Savannah to New Orleans, remaining cautious, perceptive, and aloof. He cannot afford to draw interest or get attached. Nevertheless, he finds it impossible to hold back when he meets Miranda Emerson. But since not all thieves adhere to Harry's code of integrity, their strong relationship cannot last. To amass greater riches, some people compensate others for taking risks. Some are motivated by the desire to possess individuals in the same manner that they own jewelry and artworks. Additionally, once Harry accepts a profitable task that Carter LaPorte commissions him for, LaPorte recognizes a useful tool and determines he wants to possess Harry.

The guy is a monster much more terrifying than the bayou's resident alligators. After forcing Harry to plunder a Baltimore museum with force, Harry brutally deserts Miranda and vanishes. But LaPorte always hovers over Harry's life, regardless of the name he goes by or where he travels. He has to defeat his opponent once and for all if he is to be really free. Then and only then can he aspire to own anything worth more than whatever he has ever pilfered.
