In the well-known town of Holt, Colorado, the location for all of Kent Haruf's distinctive literature, Addie Moore makes a surprise visit to Louis Waters, a neighbour. Since their tiny town makes it inevitable that they have known one other for decades—Addie was even extremely fond of Louis's wife—both her spouse and his wife passed away many years ago. His daughter is in Colorado Springs, many hours away, and her son in Grand Junction, much farther away. Addie and Louis have been living alone in residences that are now devoid of family for a long time. The evenings are quite lonely, particularly because they have no one to speak to.
