Costly and eerily perceptive, Cayce Pollard is a market research consultant. While working in London, she receives a covert assignment to look into some fascinating video clips that have been making the rounds on the Internet. These clips have spawned a whole subculture, and anybody who can cultivate that kind of brand devotion would be very valuable to Cayce's client. However, she discovers there's more to this job than she had anticipated when her computer is hacked and her borrowed apartment is broken into.

Nevertheless, Cayce is obstinate since she is her father's daughter and feels threatened. On September 11, 2011, Win Pollard, an ex-security specialist and likely former CIA agent, is said to have died after getting into a cab and heading toward the World Trade Center. Win gave Cayce some insight into the workings of agents. She is still in shock over his passing, and she won't give up this strange new job—which will take her to Moscow and beyond—for him as much as for any other reason. Cayce will track the enigmatic film's trail to its source with assistance and treachery from equally unexpected places, and in the process, she will discover some information about her father's life and death.
