A fire destroyed a farmhouse

A corpse among the rubble

Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, a consultant pathologist for the government criminal enforcement organization ATF, gets a call about a fire-ravaged farmhouse in Virginia. She discovers a corpse among the house's wreckage that bears witness to a brutal and graphic murder.

The fire has coincided with an even more horrific event: Carrie Grethen, a murderer who almost took the lives of Scarpetta and those closest to her, has broken out from a forensic mental health facility. Although her current whereabouts is unclear, Carrie has started speaking with Scarpetta about her lethal, if ambiguous, plans for retaliation.

Patricia Cornwell is at her most brilliant in Point of Origin, a complex work with a tone that is chillingly mesmerizing.
