What transpires when a young lady just happens to be in the wrong location at the wrong time and is unintentionally drawn into a risky murder investigation? Rising star Lacey Farrell of the Manhattan real estate market witnesses a murder and hears the victim's last words. Lacey delivers the police her daughter's diary, which the dying lady is certain her assailant was wanting, but not before making a copy for herself. This urge subsequently turns out to be almost deadly. After being transported to live in Minneapolis under the witness protection program, Lacey is forced to adopt a false identity—at least until the murderer can be tried. There she meets Tom Lynch, a radio talk-show host whom she tentatively begins to date - until the strain of her deception makes her break it off. She then learns that the murderer has tracked her down. With only her bravery and the journal's hints as her only resources, Lacey returns to New York determined to find out who is responsible for the two women's deaths—before she becomes the next victim.
