After being forced into retirement, Evan Smoak receives a desperate plea for assistance from a person he never even knew existed.

Evan Smoak was taken from a foster home when he was a kid and trained in the clandestine Orphan Program. He was one of the best government assassins, dubbed Orphan X by a few insiders. Ultimately, he left the Program, taking on the alias "The Nowhere Man" and a new goal of aiding the most in need during difficult times. However, the nation's highest authority has given him an alluring offer: in return for an unofficial pardon, he must end his covert operations as The Nowhere Man. Subsequently, he receives a call for assistance from an unexpected person. A woman he never met—his mother—who claimed to have placed him for adoption. Her improbable request is to assist Andrew Duran, a guy whose life has fallen apart and who was unlucky enough to attract the lethal attention of influential people. Now that a vicious brother and sister assassination team is after him, Duran has no one to turn to and nowhere safe to hide, so Evan is his last choice. But everything Evan has battled for, including his own life, is at stake when the covert cabal discovers what he is doing.
