The coup led by Field Marshal Tamas against his monarchy executed dishonest nobility and provided food for the hungry. However, it also sparked a conflict with the Nine Nations, internal assaults by fervent royalists, and an avaricious struggle for wealth and authority among Tamas's purported supporters, the Church, labour organisations, and mercenary troops.

Exhausted, Tamas is mostly depending on the few powder mages he still has, namely the resentful Taniel, a skilled marksman and his estranged son, and Adamat, a former police inspector whose allegiance is being threatened with extortion.

But when gods are involved... Now that they are under internal and external assault, the gullible are muttering about death and destruction omens. Just ancient folktales passed down from peasants about gods rising from the dead to wander the world. That kind of stuff is unheard of in today's educated guy. But they ought to.
