In Enugu, Nigeria, fifteen-year-old Kambili and her elder brother Jaja enjoy affluent lives. They attend a private missionary school and live in a lovely home with a loving family. They are totally protected from the problems in the outside world. However, as Kambili demonstrates in her heartfelt narrative, things are not as ideal as they seem. Her Papa is a kind and well-respected man, but at home, in his quiet and stuffy house, he is an absolute religious tyrant.

When a military coup causes the nation to collapse, Kambili and Jaja are taken to live with their aunt, a professor at a university outside of the city, where they learn about life outside of their father's control. The home is filled with books, the smells of curry and nutmeg, and the sound of their relatives laughing reverberates throughout. Tensions in the family rise once they reach home, and Kambili has to muster the will to keep her loved ones together.

The magnificent book Purple Hibiscus explores the complex emotions of adolescence, the strong ties that bind families, and the hopeful prospect of liberation.
