Christmas, ah! Gemma Doyle is excited about her break from Spence Academy, spending time in the city with her friends, going to fancy balls, and, on a more serious note, taking care of her sick father. It seems that Lord Denby, a dashing young man, has his eye on Gemma as she gets ready to welcome in the year 1896. However, Gemma begins to see more vivid visions among the distractions of London. These images are of three girls clad in white, who are witnesses to a tragic event that can only be explained by the realms.
Gemma, Felicity, and Ann find themselves transforming flowers into butterflies in the magical regions that only Gemma can lead them to, as the allure is great. The girls are overjoyed to see their dear Pippa there as well, ready to expand their group of pals.
However, not everything in the realms is well, either. Resurfacing, the enigmatic Kartik warns Gemma that until she locates the Temple and binds the power, a terrible catastrophe would strike her. Despite the risks, Gemma is prepared to comply with his invasive requests since doing so would allow her to see Circe, her mother's closest friend and current nemesis. Gemma is unable to fulfill her destiny until Circe is destroyed. However, tracking for Circe turns out to be a very dangerous undertaking.
