February 15, 2003, a Saturday. Henry Perowne is a happy guy who works as a successful neurosurgeon, is married to Rosalind, and is glad to have two grown children. He wakes up unusually early, attracted to his bedroom window and feeling more uneasy. He is worried by the status of the world as he gazes up into the night sky, feeling as if his city and his pleasant family life are in danger due to the coming war against Iraq and the growing pessimism that has followed 9/11.
Later, a small automobile accident puts Perowne in a confrontation with a restless, aggressive young guy on the verge of violence named Baxter as he navigates through the streets of London, which are crowded with hundreds of thousands of anti-war demonstrators. From a professional standpoint, Perowne seems to have a serious problem. But Henry's worries don't seem to be coming true until Baxter unexpectedly shows up for the Perowne family's reunion.
