Colin Hancock is doing his hardest to earn a second chance. His past violent and irresponsible acts behind him, along with the constant fear of going to jail, have made him determined to follow a straight path. For Colin, this entails focusing entirely on pursuing his teaching degree and staying away from everything that didn't work out in his previous life. He constantly tells himself that a committed relationship is the last thing he needs after learning so many terrible lessons.

Maria Sanchez, the diligent daughter of Mexican immigrants, is the epitome of traditional achievement. She is a stunning woman with black hair who works for a famous Wilmington business and has a seemingly perfect professional record. She graduated from Duke Law School. However, Maria has a painful past of her own, which forced her to go back to her hometown and caused her to doubt a lot of her previous beliefs.

Colin and Maria's lives will change dramatically as a result of a fortuitous meeting on a wet road, upending long-held beliefs about one another and, eventually, about themselves. They dare to imagine what a future together may look like as love unintentionally blossoms between them... until ominous echoes of events in Maria's past start to emerge.
