Reporter Camille Preaker is faced with a difficult job after her short time at a mental health facility: she has to go back to her small community to investigate the unsolved death of a preteen girl and the abduction of another. Camille hasn't talked to her neurotic, hypocritical mother in years, nor to her gorgeous thirteen-year-old half-sister, who has a strange hold over the town. Now that the young victims are housed in her former bedroom at her family's Victorian home, Camille finds herself empathizing with them a little too much. She is plagued by her own demons and has to solve the psychological jigsaw of her past in order to understand the tale and make it through her homecoming.
