First published in a book in 1887, Sherlock Holmes is a fictitious investigator from the late 19th and early 20th century. He is the invention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a physician and writer who was born in Scotland. A brilliant detective from London, Holmes is well-known for his intellectual brilliance and his deft use of sharp observation and deductive reasoning—a relatively incorrect method of thinking, as opposed to inductive reasoning—to solve complex crimes. He is among the most well-known and instantly identifiable literary characters in any genre, and he is possibly the most well-known fictional detective ever made.Conan Doyle wrote fifty-six short tales and four books featuring Holmes. Dr. John H. Watson, a friend and biographer of Sherlock Holmes, narrated all but four of the tales; two were told by Holmes himself, and the other two were written in the third person. The first two pieces were short novels that were published in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890 and Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887. When the first collection of short tales about the character debuted in The Strand Magazine in 1891, it quickly gained popularity. Up until Conan Doyle's death in 1930, two serialized novels and other short story series continued to emerge. The tales take place between about 1878 and 1903, with the last instance taking place in 1914.This compilation includes all 66 works—60 official and 6 unauthorized Sherlock Holmes stories—making it the largest and best Sherlock Holmes eBook collection available.
