First published in a book in 1887, Sherlock Holmes is a fictitious investigator from the late 19th and early 20th century. He is the invention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a physician and writer who was born in Scotland. A brilliant detective from London, Holmes is well-known for his intellectual brilliance and his deft use of sharp observation and deductive reasoning—a relatively incorrect method of thinking, as opposed to inductive reasoning—to solve complex crimes.
