The only princess of Kiata, Shiori, is hiding something. There's forbidden magic in her blood. Usually, Shiori is good at hiding it, but the morning before her betrothal, she loses it. Her stepmother Raikama notices her error as well, but first it seems to be a lucky break that prevents the wedding she never wanted.

Using her own terrible magic, Raikama banishes the little princess, turning her brothers into cranes, and telling Shiori not to talk about it to anybody for every word that leaves her mouth would cause one of her brothers to perish.

Shiori, silent, penniless, and alone, sets out to find her siblings and discovers, along the way, a plot to seize the kingdom that is more clever, complicated, and twisted than Raikama's treachery. Shiori is the only one who can restore the kingdom, but in order to do it, she has to put her faith in the guy she has been trying so desperately not to marry. No matter the cost, she had to accept the power she has been trained to contain her whole life.
