There has never seemed freedom so elusive for Will and Evanlyn.

The Ranger's apprentice and the princess's plan to return to Araluen is ruined when Evanlyn is kidnapped by a Temujai warrior, even though they are still far from their country after fleeing servitude in the ice-bound region of Skandia. Will uses his Ranger skills to find his companion despite the warmweed's poisonous effects still weakening him, but he is vastly outnumbered by an enemy scouting group. Until his old pals bravely step in at the last minute to save him, Will is confident that his death is imminent.
