The incredible love tale of a widowed mother who can no longer see with her eyes and her husband, who is determined to see them through the dangerous journey from Syria to Europe.
Afra is an artist and Nuri is a beekeeper. In the lovely Syrian city of Aleppo, they have a modest existence full of family and friends—that is, until the unimaginable occurs. They are compelled to flee after the conflict destroys all they hold dear. Afra's vision was so horrific that it caused her to lose it, forcing them to go through dangerous Turkey and Greece in search of an uncertain future in Britain. While travelling, Nuri finds solace in the knowledge that his cousin and business partner Mustafa is waiting for them. Mustafa has established an apiary and is instructing other immigrants in Yorkshire on how to raise bees.
In addition to dealing with the agony of their own terrible loss, Nuri and Afra must navigate perils that may engulf even the most courageous of people as they traverse a damaged world. Above all, they have to travel to reunite with one another.
The Beekeeper of Aleppo is a touching, powerful, sympathetic, and well written story that exemplifies the triumph of the human spirit. This particular book serves as a good reminder of the power of narrative.
