The Book Eaters

A clandestine group of individuals who consider books to be food and who, once consumed, retain all of a book's content reside in the Yorkshire Moors. They consider romance books to be sweet and delectable, whereas espionage novels are like a spicy snack. Eating a map may aid in their memory of locations, and kids who misbehave are made to eat musty, dry dictionary pages.

Devon is a member of The Family, an ancient and reticent group of voracious readers. Her boys are spoiled with tales of bravery and exploration as they grow up, while Devon, like many bookish women, is brought up on a carefully balanced diet of cautionary tales and fairy tales.

However, as Devon discovers when her kid is born with a unique and darker form of hunger—not for books, but for human minds—real life doesn't often have happy endings.
