Vermont professor David Zimmer is lost in an alcoholic fog of self-pity and despair six months after losing his wife and two little boys. Then, one evening, he stumbles onto a scene from a long-lost silent comic Hector Mann movie. His curiosity is sparked, and before long, he is traveling the globe to gather information for a book on this enigmatic person who disappeared in 1929.
The next year, when the book is out, Zimmer receives a letter from a tiny New Mexico town asking him to meet Hector. It has a return address. Zimmer is undecided until one evening when an unfamiliar lady shows up at his house and takes his place in making the choice that will alter his life forever.
