Every morning, parents leave their daughters off at the bus stop and go about their days. Rachel Klein does this. But all changes when Rachel receives a call on her mobile phone from an unknown number. The caller, a lady, tells Rachel that Kylie is tied and gagged in her back seat and that the only way to see her again is to comply with her demands, which include finding another kid to kidnap and paying a ransom. This is no typical kidnapping—the caller is a mother whose son has been abducted and will die if Rachel disobeys her orders.

"You're not the original. You won't be the last, for sure." Rachel is now a member of The Chain, an endless and clever system that converts victims into criminals while producing a large sum of money for someone else. The guidelines are straightforward, the ethical dilemmas insurmountable: get the funds quickly, track down your victim, and then carry out a heinous deed you would have doubted your ability to do a little 24 hours prior.

The Chain's masterminds are aware that parents would stop at nothing to protect their kids, however. As it happens, abduction is only the start.
