A thirteen-year-old Jewish girl and her family abandoned their Amsterdam home and went into hiding in 1942 while the Nazis were invading Holland. In the "Secret Annexe" of an old office building, the Franks and another family remained cloistered for the next two years, until their whereabouts were revealed to the Gestapo. Cut off from the outside world, they had to contend with boredom, starvation, the cruelties of living in cramped quarters all the time, and the continuous worry of being found out and killed. Anne Frank wrote detailed recollections of her events at this time in her journal. Her story is at once profound, poignant, and shockingly funny.
