After her family experiences financial hardship, medieval historian Rosalind Hawkins accepts a job as a governess. She is shocked to discover that her mystery employer is single, has no children, and forbids her from having face-to-face meetings. Rather, her responsibilities include reading aloud to him in virtually lost, rare languages from old texts via a speaking tube.

Proficiency in interpreting medieval French was a prerequisite for the position, which she now comprehends. She surmises that her boss, who is not visible to her, has an odd fascination with accounts of medieval sorcery and spells. She is unaware that his interests are not intellectual in the slightest. He's hiding a horrible secret from you, and he's looking for a way to undo the magic that went awry and put him in this situation.
