The Ghost Brigades are the elite soldiers of the Colonial Defense Forces (CDF), specially trained to handle the most difficult tasks. They are formed from the DNA of the deceased. They are youthful, agile, powerful, and completely devoid of typical human concerns.

Humanity already lives in a perilous world, and things are about to become much worse. Three previously at odds races have banded together to stop humanity's space travel. Charles Boutin, a disloyal military scientist who is privy to the most military secrets of the CDF, is a pivotal figure. The CDF needs to know why Boutin did what he did in order to win.

Because Jared Dirac is a superhuman hybrid made of Boutin's DNA, his brain should be able to access Boutin's electronic memories, making him the only person who can give answers. Jared is turned up to the Ghost Brigades, nevertheless, when it seems that the memory transplant is failing.

Jared is an excellent soldier at first, but as Boutin's memories progressively come to light, Jared starts to figure out why Boutin betrayed him. While Jared searches frantically for his "father," he also needs to face the decisions he has made. Time is running out: The alliance is getting ready for an attack, and some of them have plans worse than the simple military destruction of mankind.
