Wang Lung and his family experience hardship as they are forced to look for employment in the city due to flooding and drought. The wealthy are forced to leave their houses as the working class rebels and breaks into their residences. Even as the House of Hwang declines, Wang Lung starts to advance in the world after showing charity to one noble and receiving praise.
