Kindly, Reader

You probably would like not get wet unless you are a mildew, a sea anemone, or a slug. It's also possible that you would rather not read this novel, in which the Baudelaire brothers go underwater and experience an uncomfortable level of moisture as they plunge into the depths of hopelessness.

The horrors they experience are really too many to describe, and you wouldn't want me to even bring up the worst of it, which involves tap dancing, mushrooms, a frantic attempt to find something missing, a mechanical monster, and a heartbreaking letter from a buddy who has vanished.

I have to go further into the vast abysses of the orphans' existence because I am a committed writer who has vowed to continue writing the gloomy tale of the Baudelaires. Instead of letting your eyes and your emotions become down, you may curl up with a book that is cheerful.

With the utmost respect,

Citrus Snicket
