A cunning young lady is doing varying degrees of relatively innocuous deception in an attempt to live. She is reading auras at Spiritual Palms on a wet April morning when Susan Burke enters. Our anonymous narrator, who is astute in observing human behaviour, recognises wealthy and attractive Susan right away as an unhappy person hoping to add some drama to her idyllic existence. But Susan discovers she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts after all when the "psychic" pays a visit to the scary Victorian house that has been the cause of her fear and sorrow. Susan's adolescent stepson Miles exacerbates the situation with his unsettling demeanour and vivid imagination. The three are quickly enmeshed in a terrifying struggle to find out exactly where the evil is hiding and if there is anything that can be done to stop it.
The Grownup first appears in George R. R. Martin's Rogues anthology under the title "What Do You Do?"
