Patrick, sometimes known as Gay Uncle Patrick (or GUP for short), has always had a soft spot for his nephew Grant and niece Maisie. That is to say, he enjoys spending time with them during his weekly vacations to Palm Springs and his annual return home to Connecticut for the holidays. But, Patrick is just a little out of his league when it comes to raising and interacting with two kids, no matter how cute they may be.
Consequently, Patrick finds himself unexpectedly assuming the position of main guardian when tragedy strikes, causing Maisie and Grant to lose their mother and Patrick's brother to have a health problem of his own. Patrick is prepared with a list of "Guncle Rules," but he has no clue what to anticipate since he has been barely hanging on for years after the death of his great love, a profession that has somewhat stopped, and a lifestyle that isn't quite appropriate for a six- and a nine-year-old. Patrick quickly learns that parenting, even temporary parenting, isn't solved by candy and jokes. He also gets a newfound feeling of duty and the insight that, sometimes, being bigger than life also means that you're unavoidably human.
