Discoveries from a Secret World: The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate.
In his book The Hidden Life of Trees, Peter Wohlleben expresses his abiding passion for forests and woodlands as well as the astounding life, death, and regeneration cycles he has seen there as well as the astounding scientific processes that underlie the marvels we are blissfully ignorant of. Like human families, tree parents coexist with their offspring, communicate with them, and provide for them as they develop. They also share nutrients with those who are ill or in need, building an ecosystem that helps the group as a whole to lessen the effects of excessive heat and cold. Trees within a family or community are protected and have a long lifespan as a consequence of these relationships. On the other hand, lone trees, like to homeless children, have difficulties and often meet an untimely end compared to their group counterparts.
Wohlleben explores the science underlying the hidden and previously undiscovered life of trees and their communication capacities, drawing on ground-breaking new findings. He also explains how these discoveries have influenced his own practises in the nearby forest. A happy forest is a healthy forest, as he puts it, and he thinks that environmentally beneficial actions are not only financially viable but also good for the planet's health and the physical and emotional well-being of all people who inhabit it.
