When an alien visitor first lands on Earth, he has negative feelings towards humans. The visitor, posing as eminent mathematician Professor Andrew Martin of Cambridge University, seeks to finish his mission and return to his planet and his ideal society of limitless knowledge and immortality.
He is completely perplexed by ideas like love and family and horrified by the way people seem, what they eat, and the battles they see on the news. However, as time passes, he begins to suspect there could be more to this strange species than has been made clear to him. He reads Emily Dickinson, listens to Talking Heads, consumes wine, and, while living in disguise, starts to become close to the family. As the narrator picks up the pieces of the professor's broken personal life, he finds redemption and hope in human defects and starts to doubt the goal that brought him there—a mission that entails murder as well as obstructing human development.
