a picture of the young female artist. A book about creating oneself, not simply finding it.
In 1995, email is still relatively new. The daughter of Turkish immigrants, Selin, comes to Harvard for her first year of study. She signs up for classes in subjects she has never heard of, befriends her charismatic and worldly Serbian classmate, Svetlana, and, almost by accident, begins corresponding with Ivan, an older mathematics student from Hungary. Even though Selin and Ivan don't communicate often, every email they send appears to have a deeper and more enigmatic meaning attached to writing.
After the school year finishes, Selin leaves for the Hungarian countryside to work as an English teacher for a programme run by one of Ivan's acquaintances, while Ivan spends the summer in Budapest. She spends two weeks seeing Paris with Svetlana en route. Selin's summer spent in Europe is unlike anything she has ever heard about the average experiences of college students in the United States, or indeed of any other sort of person. This is a deeper trip inside for Selin, as she grapples with the indescribable but thrilling confusion of her first love and the mounting realisation that her career as a writer is doomed.
