When Nahri inadvertently called upon the powerful, enigmatic djinn Dara during one of her plots, her life was permanently altered. She was taken from her Cairo home and thrown into the glittering Daevabad royal court, where she soon realized she would need to rely entirely on her grifter skills to survive.

Now that Dara was killed by Prince Ali in the war that engulfed Daevabad, Nahri is on her own to carve a new route without the support of the prince she thought of as a friend or the shield of the guardian who captured her heart. Although she loves her ancestry and its power, she is aware that she is a prisoner in a golden cage under the watchful eye of a king who sits on a throne that her family previously owned, and that one wrong move will bring her tribe to an end.

Ali, meantime, was banished for his audacity in standing up to his father. He is forced to rely on the terrifying powers the marid, the capricious water spirits, have given him while being hunted by assassins and stranded on the harsh copper sands of his home land. However, he runs the risk of revealing a horrifying secret that his family has long kept hidden.
