The Ford County Times, one of Mississippi's most colorful weekly newspapers, filed for bankruptcy in 1970. Many were shocked and upset to learn that a 23-year-old Willie Traynor, a college dropout, had taken over control. Until a young mother was brutally raped and killed by a member of the infamous Padgitt family, the paper's future seemed bleak. After publishing all the graphic facts, Willie Traynor's publication flourished.
Danny Padgitt, the killer, was put on trial in front of a jam-packed Clanton, Mississippi courtroom. The defendant's shocking and dramatic promise to get vengeance on the jury should they find him guilty marked the conclusion of the trial. He was nevertheless found guilty and given a life term in jail.
However, life did not always mean life in Mississippi in 1970, and nine years later Danny Padgitt was able to get his release. When he got back to Ford County, the revenge was on.
