Dr. Kay Scarpetta, battered both physically and mentally after her meeting with the murderer Chandonne, is forced to leave her house and entrust it to the police team looking into the incident. Her old friend Anna Zenner provides her with refuge, but it's not the safe haven she needs when she learns that Anna has been summoned to testify before a grand jury that is looking into Scarpetta's murder. Kay is aware that she is being set up and that she should never trust anybody. Although it seems that Chandonne killed a woman in New York prior to going on a murderous rampage in Virginia, Scarpetta finds that there is insufficient evidence to prove his guilt in that case, leading her to suspect that he may not have committed any of the crimes for which he is charged. This is according to the prosecutor, Jaime Berger. She eventually comes to understand that someone has been weaving a web for years with the intention of capturing her as she follows the forensic trail to the true perpetrator. Who is she, and why are they wanting to get rid of her so badly?
