Ruth Galloway feels alone in the face of pandemic lockdowns, except for a new neighbor. That is, until Nelson calls to inquire about a decades-long series of murder-suicides that are getting closer and closer. Ruth is finally going through her belongings three years after the passing of her late mother when she comes upon an odd artifact: a vintage picture of Jean's Norfolk home with an odd inscription. As news of Norfolk's first COVID-19 cases spreads, Ruth goes to the cottage to learn more about its significance, allowing her and Kate to take refuge there. They fight loneliness by standing in for frontline workers every night and making a virtual companion, Zoe, who is a loving neighbor. However, Nelson discovers Zoe is not at all who she seems to be when he lifts the quarantine to hurry to Ruth's cottage and ask for her assistance in looking into a string of murder-suicides he has linked to an archeological find. Ruth's amiable neighbor becomes more apparent to Nelson as he looks into these killings more thoroughly—that is, until Ruth, Zoe, and Kate vanish and Nelson is left frantically trying to locate them before it's too late.
