One ring to gather them all together, one ring to lead them all, and one ring to bond them in the darkness

The Elven-smiths of old created the Rings of Power, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, made the One Ring, imbuing it with his own might to subjugate all the others. However, the One Ring was stolen from him, and despite his best efforts to find it across Middle-earth, he was unable to find it. It eventually ended up in the hands of the hobbit Bilbo Baggins by coincidence after many ages.

Sauron's authority extended far and wide from his fastness in the Dark Tower of Mordor. Even though Sauron had amassed all the Great Rings, he was always looking for the One Ring to complete his hegemony.

After turning eleventy-first, Bilbo vanished, leaving the Ruling Ring and a dangerous mission for his young cousin Frodo: to go over Middle-earth, far into the Dark Lord's shadow, and destroy the Ring by tossing it into the Cracks of Doom.

The Lord of the Rings describes the epic journey that Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring—which includes Boromir of Gondor, Gandalf the Wizard, Merry, Pippin, and Sam, the hobbit Gimli the Dwarf, Legolas the Elf, and a tall, enigmatic stranger named Strider—took.
